WP 3.0 and Custom Post Types

With the up coming release of WordPress 3.0, we are going to get a lot of new features. One of the anticipated features is Custom Post Types.

Custom post types allow users to easily create and management such things as portfolios, projects, video libraries, podcasts, quotes, chats, and whatever a user or developer can imagine.

Justin Tadlock has written a great tutorial about Custom Post Types. I recommend reading it and letting your imagination go when thinking about the different things you will be able to do.

WordPress 2.8 is here

WordPress 2.8 is here now for download. It has improvements to themes, widgets, taxonomies and overall speed. Check out the list of over 180 new features, changes, upgrades and improvements. The wordpress blog has a good video showcasing everything new in this release of wordpress.

June 10th 2009 we all will get to update or WordPress installs to 2.8. But if you can’t wait to try out the new version of WordPress 2.8 you can download and try Release Candidate 1. This will probably be the only release candidate Version 2.8 is pretty much complete and on track for the June 10th release.

What I look forward to the most is that Justin Tadlock from ThemeHybrid will be releaseing version 0.6 of the Hybrid Theme shortly after the release of WordPress 2.8.

Theme Frameworks

Theme frameworks are very useful tools when building WordPress sites. Frameworks can speed up site development reducing the volume of work needed in creating the backbone for your theme. Frameworks can be a solid base to use with Child Themes. Child Themes can change how the Framework functions and looks by overwriting parent files.

There are many great frameworks to use. Some are a little more robust than others. Some of the frameworks work well with child themes, others work well in just modifying into a theme. Finding a good base for the framework can allow you to make many different variations of a theme while maintaining the same basic functionality. A child theme can be a simple CSS file that just changes the look and layout. Or it can include more functions or overwrite some of the framework files to change how the theme functions. Frameworks also allow for easier upgrading, since the child theme may only be one CSS file, you only have to upgrade to the new version of the framework.

Here you will find a list of some of the frameworks I found. Check them out and give them a try.

WP 2.7 Beta 1

It’s here, the first public beta of WordPress 2.7. I am very excited to get it installed and give it a test run. The final version is going to be delayed, but we can test out the new interface now. A release canidate will be available on November 10 and the final version will be comming about two weeks after that.

Minor WordPress Upgrade

WordPress has released a security update to their blogging software. A vulnerability was discovered in the Snoopy library. WordPress uses Snoopy to fetch the feeds shown in the Control Panel Dashboard.

Although this seems to be a low risk vulnerability for WordPress users, the company wanted to get an update out immediately. 2.6.3 is available for download right now.

Because this is a security issue, all WordPress users must upgrade. Fortunately, this new release updates only two files. If you don’t want to download the entire WordPress program just to get the security fix, you can download the following two files and copy them over your 2.6.2 installation.

Replacing two files is a lot easier than upgrading an entire WordPress installation. This has been the easiest to install update yet.
